The Coates 30kW 240V Single-Phase Electric Pool & Spa Heater (Model 12430CE / 12430CPH) is the highest-capacity single-phase electric immersion heater in the Coates commercial lineup. It is engineered for high-demand municipal therapy pools, swim schools, resort spas, and commercial plunge pools requiring rapid heat-up and high recovery rates without natural gas venting or propane storage infrastructure.
At 30kW on a single-phase 240V line, this unit draws substantial current and is configured with staged contactors and multiple branch circuits to satisfy National Electrical Code (NEC) conductor and overcurrent limitations.
Electrical & Heating Performance
-
Model Designation: Coates 12430CE / 12430CPH series.
-
Heating Capacity: 30 kW (30,000 Watts).
-
Thermal Output: 102,364 BTU/hr ($30\text{ kW} \times 3,412.142\text{ BTU/kWh}$).
-
Operating Voltage: 240V AC, Single-Phase (1Ø), 60 Hz.
-
Full Load Amperage (FLA): 125.0 Amps ($30,000\text{ W} / 240\text{ V} = 125.0\text{ A}$).
-
Overcurrent Protection (Breaker Sizing): Requires a minimum total branch circuit protection rating of 160 Amps under NEC continuous-duty loading standards ($125.0\text{ A} \times 1.25 = 156.25\text{ A}$).
-
Standard Commercial Field Wiring: Due to high amperage, the unit is typically sub-divided into multiple branch circuits (e.g., two 80A / 2-pole breakers or three 60A / 2-pole breakers depending on internal staging/terminal block configuration) or fed via a dedicated 175A / 200A subpanel distribution feeder.
-
-
Conductor Sizing:
-
Single Dedicated Run: Minimum #2/0 AWG or #3/0 AWG THHN/THWN copper conductor (rated 75°C/90°C terminals).
-
Split Multi-Circuit Feeds: Two parallel runs of #3 AWG copper (on dual 80A circuits) or three runs of #6 AWG copper (on triple 50A/60A circuits).
-
Construction & Safety Architecture
-
Pressure Vessel: Extended heavy-gauge, welded cylindrical steel/stainless steel pressure vessel treated with corrosion-resistant internal lining to endure high flow velocities and aggressive commercial chemical sanitizers.
-
Heating Elements: Commercial screw-plug immersion elements sheathed in high-grade Incoloy 800/825 or Titanium alloy to resist chemical pitting, scale buildup, and high thermal stress.
-
Cabinet & Enclosure: NEMA 1 industrial painted heavy-gauge steel cabinet with a full front-access service door for element maintenance, terminal torque checks, and multi-lug electrical terminations.
-
Integrated Safety Controls:
-
Dual-dial adjustable thermostatic controller calibrated up to 104°F (40°C) for commercial spa compliance.
-
Manual-reset High-Limit safety switch set to disconnect power at 122°F (50°C).
-
Pressure/flow-interlock switch preventing heating element energization during zero-flow, deadhead, or pump shutdown conditions.
-
Hydraulic & Plumbing Specifications
-
Plumbing Connections: Standard 1-1/2" NPT female inlet and outlet ports (often adapted to 2" or 2-1/2" Schedule 80 PVC/CPVC manifolds).
-
Flow Rate Parameters:
-
Minimum Flow Rate: 20 GPM (approx. 76 LPM) required to trip the internal safety flow interlock and prevent localized element boiling.
-
Maximum Flow Rate: 60 to 70 GPM (approx. 227 to 265 LPM); higher circulation systems require an external bypass manifold.
-
-
Maximum Working Pressure: 60 PSI (approx. 4.14 bar).
Dimensions, Net Weight & Shipping Weight
-
Unit Dimensions: Approximately 24.0" L × 12.0" W × 16.5" H (approx. 61.0 cm × 30.5 cm × 41.9 cm).
-
Net Unit Weight: Approximately 68 to 76 lbs (approx. 30.8 to 34.5 kg).
-
Packaged Shipping Dimensions: Approximately 26" L × 15" W × 19" H.
-
Packaged Shipping Weight: Approximately 82 to 92 lbs (approx. 37.2 to 41.7 kg) in reinforced corrugated packaging with dense molded foam inserts.
Estimated Temperature Rise Rates
| Pool / Spa Volume | Water Weight | Approx. Temperature Rise per Hour |
| 500 Gallons | ~4,170 lbs | 24.5°F / hr |
| 1,000 Gallons | ~8,340 lbs | 12.3°F / hr |
| 2,500 Gallons | ~20,850 lbs | 4.9°F / hr |
| 5,000 Gallons | ~41,700 lbs | 2.5°F / hr |
| 10,000 Gallons | ~83,400 lbs | 1.2°F / hr |
(Calculation: $\text{Rise (°F/hr)} = \frac{102,364\text{ BTU/hr}}{\text{Gallons} \times 8.34\text{ lbs/gal}}$, baseline heat-up rate assuming covered vessel without ambient losses.)
