The Coates 54kW 240V Single-Phase Electric Pool & Spa Heater (Model 12454CE / 12454CPH) represents the maximum heating envelope available in a single-phase commercial inline configuration. Engineered for high-volume public therapy pools, commercial resort swim spas, wellness facilities, and swim-school training tanks, it provides extreme recovery capability in locations where natural gas venting is prohibited or physically impossible.

Because a 54kW load on a 240V single-phase electrical service requires over 200 Amps of continuous current, this unit utilizes internal bank segmentation with staged magnetic contactors, designed specifically to be powered via multiple sub-divided branch circuits or a dedicated high-capacity distribution subpanel.

Electrical & Heating Performance

  • Model Designation: Coates 12454CE / 12454CPH series.

  • Heating Capacity: 54 kW (54,000 Watts).

  • Thermal Output: 184,256 BTU/hr ($54\text{ kW} \times 3,412.142\text{ BTU/kWh}$).

  • Operating Voltage: 240V AC, Single-Phase (1Ø), 60 Hz.

  • Full Load Amperage (FLA): 225.0 Amps ($54,000\text{ W} / 240\text{ V} = 225.0\text{ A}$).

  • Overcurrent Protection (Breaker Sizing): Requires a total branch protection capacity of 285 to 300 Amps to comply with NEC 125% continuous-duty loading standards ($225.0\text{ A} \times 1.25 = 281.25\text{ A}$).

    • Standard Multi-Feed Branch Architecture: Because terminating 225A continuous on a single small terminal block is impractical, the internal elements are split into staged sub-circuits:

      • Three independent 100A / 2-Pole branch circuits (each powering an 18kW element cluster at 75.0A continuous load: $75.0\text{ A} \times 1.25 = 93.75\text{ A}$ minimum breaker rating), OR

      • Four or more sub-divided branch circuits (depending on internal factory contactor and terminal staging).

  • Conductor Sizing (Copper Only, 75°C/90°C THHN/THWN):

    • Three-Circuit Split: Three independent runs of #1 AWG or #1/0 AWG copper conductors.

    • Main Subpanel Feeder (if feeding a dedicated localized panel): Minimum 300 kcmil or 350 kcmil copper (or parallel runs) on a dedicated 300A distribution panelboard.

Construction & Safety Architecture

  • Pressure Vessel: Heavy-gauge, welded cylindrical steel/stainless steel vessel with an internal protective baked coating engineered to resist erosion, galvanic action, and aggressive commercial chemical sanitizers.

  • Heating Elements: Screw-plug immersion elements with heavy-duty Incoloy 800/825 or Titanium alloy sheathing to resist localized boiling pitting, scaling, and high thermal stress.

  • Cabinet & Enclosure: NEMA 1 industrial painted heavy-gauge steel cabinet with full-front service access for multi-stage contactor inspection, wiring terminations, and routine terminal lug torque checks.

  • Integrated Safety Controls:

    • Dual-dial adjustable thermostatic controller calibrated up to 104°F (40°C) for commercial spa compliance.

    • Manual-reset High-Limit safety cutout set to de-energize control contactors at 122°F (50°C).

    • Flow/pressure interlock switch preventing heating element contactors from pulling in during low-flow, deadhead, or pump shutdown conditions.

Hydraulic & Plumbing Specifications

  • Plumbing Connections: Standard 1-1/2" NPT female inlet and outlet ports (adapted via Schedule 80 unions into 2", 2-1/2", or 3" CPVC manifolds).

  • Flow Rate Parameters:

    • Minimum Flow Rate: 30 GPM (approx. 114 LPM) required to trip the flow switch and prevent localized thermal cavitation/boiling over the dense 54kW element array.

    • Maximum Flow Rate: 60 to 70 GPM (approx. 227 to 265 LPM); higher circulation filtration loops mandate an external plumbed bypass manifold.

  • Maximum Working Pressure: 60 PSI (approx. 4.14 bar).

Dimensions, Net Weight & Shipping Weight

  • Unit Dimensions: Approximately 24.0" L × 12.0" W × 16.5" H (approx. 61.0 cm × 30.5 cm × 41.9 cm).

  • Net Unit Weight: Approximately 88 to 96 lbs (approx. 39.9 to 43.5 kg).

  • Packaged Shipping Dimensions: Approximately 26" L × 15" W × 19" H.

  • Packaged Shipping Weight: Approximately 102 to 114 lbs (approx. 46.3 to 51.7 kg) in heavy-duty reinforced corrugated packaging with dense molded foam inserts.

Estimated Temperature Rise Rates

Pool / Spa Volume Water Weight Approx. Temperature Rise per Hour
500 Gallons ~4,170 lbs 44.2°F / hr
1,000 Gallons ~8,340 lbs 22.1°F / hr
2,500 Gallons ~20,850 lbs 8.8°F / hr
5,000 Gallons ~41,700 lbs 4.4°F / hr
10,000 Gallons ~83,400 lbs 2.2°F / hr
15,000 Gallons ~125,100 lbs 1.5°F / hr
20,000 Gallons ~166,800 lbs 1.1°F / hr

(Calculation: $\text{Rise (°F/hr)} = \frac{184,256\text{ BTU/hr}}{\text{Gallons} \times 8.34\text{ lbs/gal}}$, baseline heat-up rate assuming covered vessel without ambient radiation losses.)
