The Hayward Flow Diffuser is a critical stationary component found within the wet end of pool pumps, such as the Super II and Max-Flo series, as well as select Perflex D.E. filters. Manufactured from a high-strength, glass-reinforced engineered plastic, this stationary housing fits precisely over the rotating impeller. Its primary mechanical function is to act as a velocity-to-pressure converter; as the impeller flings water outward at high speeds, the diffuser’s specialized internal vanes capture this turbulent flow and guide it into a controlled, high-pressure stream directed toward the pump’s discharge port. This process is essential for the pump’s self-priming capability, as it helps to efficiently evacuate air from the suction line during startup. In filtration applications, like the Perflex series, the diffuser ensures that incoming water is evenly distributed across the filter media to prevent "channeling" and maximize debris collection. Because it is a high-wear part subjected to constant hydraulic friction, it is designed with smooth internal surfaces to reduce turbulence and improve energy efficiency. For shipping and logistical purposes, the estimated weight of the Hayward Flow Diffuser is approximately 1.1 pounds in its retail protective packaging, while the actual dry weight of the individual molded component is roughly 0.65 pounds.
