The Link Automation ORP Probe with BNC Connector Cable (Pool Link / Link Automation) is a heavy-duty, commercial-grade oxidation-reduction potential electrode engineered for commercial swimming pool, spa, and water treatment automation systems. It measures the net oxidizing/reducing power of the water to quantify sanitizer activity (free chlorine, bromine, or ozone) in millivolts ($mV$), transmitting the signal to the controller via a low-noise, shielded coaxial cable terminated with a standard BNC connector.

Hardware & Analytical Architecture

Designed to withstand continuous immersion in aggressive, chemically treated commercial aquatic environments:

  • High-Purity Platinum Sensing Surface: Features a solid platinum band or disc tip that provides rapid electron exchange with chemical oxidizers in the sample stream, delivering immediate response to residual fluctuations.

  • Sealed Reference Chamber: Contains a gelled silver/silver chloride ($Ag/AgCl$) reference electrolyte system that requires no liquid refills or pressurization during routine service.

  • Porous Annular Junction: Outfitted with a porous Teflon or ceramic junction that resists fouling from suspended solids, bather oils, and mineral scale while maintaining steady electrical contact with the water stream.

  • Low-Noise Shielded Coax: Heavy-gauge, double-shielded coaxial cable engineered to suppress electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio-frequency noise from variable frequency drives (VFDs), large circulation pump motors, and high-voltage feeder relays.

  • Corrosion-Resistant BNC Connector: Terminated with a nickel- or gold-plated BNC plug protected by an integrated rubber/silicone boot to guard against corrosion in humid, chloramine-rich chemical rooms.

  • Protective Storage Boot: Ships pre-hydrated with a wetting cap filled with 3.8 M or 4.0 M potassium chloride ($KCl$) storage solution to protect the reference junction during storage and transit.

Technical Specifications

  • Measurement Range: 0 to 1,000 mV (full operating potential typically -1,000 to +1,000 mV).

  • Reference System: $Ag/AgCl$ with gelled electrolyte.

  • Response Time: Reaches $90\%$ of final stabilized reading within 3 to 10 seconds in an active flow stream.

  • Operating Temperature Range: 32°F to 140°F (0°C to 60°C).

  • Maximum Operating Pressure: 50 PSI (approx. 3.45 bar) in commercial flow cell manifolds.

  • Process Mounting Connection: 1/2" NPT or 3/4" NPT threaded body / compression collar gland mount (direct fit for Pool Link 500 Series, Legacy chambers, and Hayward CAT flow cells).

  • Cable Length: Standard 10-foot (approx. 3.0 m) lead (with optional 20-foot or 30-foot variants for remote panel mounts).

Maintenance, Cleaning & Calibration Protocols

  • Storage Protocol: Keep the reference junction wet at all times. Store in 4.0 M KCl solution (or pool water in a temporary pinch). Never store in pure distilled or deionized water, as this leaches reference electrolytes out through the porous junction.

  • Platinum Cleaning: Remove mineral scaling or organic oil film by soaking the tip in a 5% to 10% hydrochloric acid solution or household vinegar for 5 to 10 minutes. If the platinum band is passivated or coated with bio-film, gently swab the metal surface with a soft cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol or a mild abrasive slurry (such as toothpaste or liquid dish soap), followed by a clean water rinse.

  • Calibration & Verification: Verified using standard quinhydrone reference solutions ($pH\ 4.00$ buffer saturated with quinhydrone yields approx. $+263\text{ mV}$ at 25°C; $pH\ 7.00$ buffer with quinhydrone yields approx. $+86\text{ mV}$).
