The Link Automation ORP Probe with BNC Connector Cable, Gold Tipped (Pool Link / Link Automation) is a specialized commercial-grade oxidation-reduction potential electrode engineered specifically for water systems that utilize salt chlorine generation (electrolytic chlorinators) or ozone oxidation. While standard commercial ORP probes utilize a platinum band, electrolytic salt systems generate micro-bubbles of hydrogen gas at the electrolytic cathode that can adsorb onto platinum surfaces, causing false low millivolt ($mV$) readings (hydrogen overpotential). A solid gold sensing tip resists this hydrogen interference, delivering stable, accurate oxidation potential tracking in salt-chlorinated commercial pools, spas, and aquatic centers.
Hardware & Analytical Architecture
Engineered for continuous immersion in salt-chlorine and ozone-supplemented commercial water:
-
High-Purity Solid Gold (Au) Sensing Tip: Outfitted with a high-purity gold band or disc sensing element. Gold exhibits a significantly higher hydrogen overpotential than platinum, preventing hydrogen gas adsorption and eliminating the artificial downward ORP drift common to platinum probes in saltwater pools.
-
Sealed $Ag/AgCl$ Reference Half-Cell: Utilizes an internal silver/silver chloride reference system embedded in a saturated, high-viscosity potassium chloride ($KCl$) gel matrix that requires no liquid electrolyte replenishment or periodic repressurization.
-
Porous Annular Liquid Junction: Features a broad-surface porous Teflon or ceramic annular junction designed to resist fouling from suspended bather organics, oils, and calcium carbonate scale while maintaining steady electrolytic continuity with the sample stream.
-
Shielded Low-Noise Coaxial Cable: Wrapped in heavy-gauge, double-shielded coaxial jacketing engineered to reject electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio-frequency interference (RFI) emitted by adjacent variable frequency drives (VFDs), electronic salt chlorinator power supplies, and high-voltage pump motors.
-
Corrosion-Proof BNC Plug: Terminated with a nickel- or gold-plated BNC connector fitted with a molded elastomeric moisture boot to guard the physical electrical contacts against ambient chemical room vapors.
-
Protective Hydration Boot: Ships pre-hydrated with a liquid-tight storage boot filled with 3.8 M or 4.0 M potassium chloride ($KCl$) storage buffer to protect the reference junction and glass membrane during storage and handling.

Calibration, Cleaning & Maintenance
-
Hydration Protocol: The gold tip and porous junction must remain wet at all times. When removing the probe from the flow cell for winterizing or plumbing repairs, reinstall the wetting boot filled with 4.0 M KCl solution (or clean pool water temporarily). Never store the probe in distilled or deionized water, as zero-ion water rapidly leaches reference ions through the porous liquid junction.
-
Gold Tip Cleaning: Do not use abrasive sandpaper on gold tips. Remove organic bio-films or bather oils by gently wiping the gold surface with a soft cotton swab saturated with isopropyl alcohol or mild liquid detergent. For mineral scale, soak the tip in a 5% to 10% hydrochloric acid solution or household white vinegar for 5 to 10 minutes, followed by a thorough tap water rinse.
-
Calibration & Verification: Verified using standard quinhydrone redox reference buffers ($pH\ 4.00$ buffer saturated with quinhydrone yields approximately $+263\text{ mV}$ at 25°C; $pH\ 7.00$ buffer saturated with quinhydrone yields approximately $+86\text{ mV}$).
