The Pentair Triton C-3 3" Hub Assembly (part number 154016Z) is a heavy-duty internal fluid-distribution and collection hub engineered exclusively for large-format commercial water treatment infrastructure. This genuine original equipment manufacturer (OEM) replacement component is tailored specifically to reinforce the lower internal piping grids of Pentair Triton C and Triton C-3 Commercial Sand Filters.
Primary Operational Role & Mechanics
The hub assembly serves as the central structural foundation for the sand filter's underlying multi-finger fluid collection grid. Its primary operational role is to anchor a series of radiating internal lateral fingers at the bottom of the filter vessel, connecting them directly into the tank's wide-format, high-capacity 3-inch lower internal plumbing lines.
During the standard pool filtration cycle, large volumes of water are pushed under heavy pressure down through a dense media bed consisting of thousands of pounds of silica sand and gravel. As the water reaches the base of the tank, the radial laterals strain out the dirt and pool debris, directing the clean water into this 3-inch central hub. The hub consolidates these high-velocity streams and channels the unified water volume back out through the lower bulkhead and return lines.
Conversely, during backwashing, the hub evenly distributes incoming high-velocity water into each lateral finger to expand and flush trapped debris out of the sand bed. By balancing hydraulic pressure across the entire 360-degree base of the commercial vessel, this hub assembly maximizes filtration efficiency, prevents localized water channeling ("tunneling"), and eliminates dead-zones.
Material Resiliency & Performance
Because it must operate under the crushing weight of massive sand loads and handle the intense flow variables required by commercial facilities, the hub is injection-molded from a heavy-walled, high-impact polymer composite. It is designed to:
-
Contain Massive Pressure Loads: Safely withstand continuous internal system operating pressures up to 50 PSI while easily absorbing sudden pump startup surges.
-
Resist Chemical and Abrasive Wear: The robust, inert engineering plastic resists continuous physical abrasion from moving sand particles and completely prevents material blistering, brittleness, or breakdown from constant exposure to high-strength sanitizers (such as liquid chlorine, bromine, and ozone systems) and routine seasonal acid washes.
System Note: This component features a robust 3-inch plumbing interface, differentiating it from the smaller 1.25-inch and 1.5-inch lateral hubs utilized in standard residential Triton II, Tagelus, or Sand Dollar filters. Always confirm your filter model states "Triton C" or "Triton C-3" commercial series prior to replacement installation.
